Graduations, Couples, and Copyrights

My teacher once told me: “just because you own the camera and pressed the shutter doesnt mean its your image. if your assisting or using someone elses lighting or set up, its their copyright, its their image, and you need to ask them permission”

I’ve never had this problem even though he’s warned mee dozens of times to stop letting people just have the pictures i set up or light on my own, but i’ve been seeing it pop up alot lately that i know at one point i would have to stop someone from using my images that are unique to my education. Although i’m not too sure about the morality of this, I have always believed that photography is a sharing experience and that if an assistant helps me, then he can shoot whatever he wants and use it in his portfolio.

Its good to remember though, 1. raws are your negatives, proof the image is yours, if you give it away you give your image away, and 2. if you didn’t set up the image or your working for someone else, the image is not originally yours, ask permission. Either way, what i am saying is, don’t lose friends by stealing their work, if you want to steal their work, just ask them, :) for the most part they will be fine with it as long as there’s no alterior motive. This is my opinion, but to each his own ofcourse. So hows that for Photography 301?

Anyway to a more lighthearted story line…

I am a wedding and engagement photographer! I can do other things if needed but my passion is in couples, I like posing them, making them look places, having them life, kiss, smile, and find that passion inside of them. People in love are in their element, and thats what i love shooting. So when i did Angela’s grad pictures today, I got really into it when Angela’s boyfriend Daniel got into the pictures. In the end though, i got some great shots of both Angela, and Angela and Daniel. Angela is graduating from Cal State Long Beach and we did a bunch of pictures at the pyramid area of the campus. Hope you like your photos!

Adrienne and Jamel Engaged – Laguna Beach, CA

Adrienne and Jamel came to me early January asking me to shoot their wedding later this year in September back in their hometown in the Bay Area. I gladly accepted realizing this would be my first destination wedding! I’m so excited since they are accomodating Gaby and I for an entire weekend and after meeting them that first time we absolutely knew they would be incredibly fun. But I have to say i didn’t realize how fun till we did our engagement session this last Sunday.

Adrienne and Jamel were incredible! They had a model look to them that made each picture i took look like it came out of a magazine. On top of that Jamel is a hardcore Laker fan just like I am! The shoot was incredible as we stumbled upon a goldmine, Irvine Bowl Park which was absolutely empty (lucky us) in Laguna Beach. Our original plan was thwarted by this diamond in the rough location and we decided to continue deeper into the coliseum looking place. We found so many great spots, and our hour and a half stay in their went by so fast, i wish we had more time because there were some really nice locations we could have tried to see. Gaby ended up running up a path into the middle of a jungle that would have been perfect to shoot if we had stayed a bit longer. Afterwards we rushed to the beach to go the infamous key hole but once again thwarted by a high tide, darn that almost full moon. Instead we did get some amazing tide shots and a fishing line hooked into Adriennes dress. After some careful sew work by the combined hands of yours truly and Jamel, we were able to escape. :) we ended the night by crashing Benihana, Jamel’s first time there, and finally went back to the office to check out the pictures. All in all Gaby and I had a greaaat time and have really gotten to know Jamel and Adrienne much better. It felt like we knew each other for years, something i completely love about this couple. I truly hope these pictures illustrate half the amazing these two are. Thanks for everything Adrienne and Jamel!

Beach Week Sessions

I got to play around with lighting this week as a had 2 beach sessions scheduled. The first one was on wednesday with Krystle Tugadi and the second one was with Nina and Eloy. I shot both with Gaby helping me out, and Tony Tran helped out with Krystles shoot. For Krystles shoot we went down to main street pier in Seal Beach and found the museum train cart thing off of main, we fooled around and got some fun shots, but the best stuff was walking down the pier and holding an umbrella in the wind. Shooting Krystle was super fun because she was full of energy and excitement. Krystle was a great model and posed exactly how we wanted her and was open to everything. On Friday during Nina and Eloy’s short session i got to really experiment with lighting under the pier and with foilage. I am definitely learning alot through on hands experimenting and researching everyday. Eventually i’ll be able to master (or be a student getting closer to it) the new lighting techniques i’m trying to learn. Here are the pics from the beach shoots, hope you like them!

First off is Krystle’s Session
